History

The 1941 T-34 shocked Germany; the 1944 85 mm three-man turret fixed the two-man turret’s fatal workload. It was the tank that took Berlin and the template for T-44/T-54. Still appearing in African and Middle Eastern wars decades later.

Doctrine

Deep battle in a 32-tonne package: diesel range, wide tracks, and enough gun to fight Panthers from the flank. Built by the tens of thousands so rifle corps always had armor. Crews were expendable relative to the operation.

Strengths

  • Slope, diesel, width of track
  • Simple mass production
  • 85 mm HE and AP

Limits

  • Ergonomics
  • Optics vs German sights
  • Armor vs L/70 and 88
